In February, Campbellsville University, the Center for Faith and Ministry and its director, Dr. Twyla Hernandez, decided to start the first Bible study group for Hispanics, giving them the opportunity to share the word with each other and learn new things. What started as an idea has now become a space for connection, reflection and spiritual growth.
Every group needs a leader, someone to guide the Bible studies. That leader is CU junior Shalem Canales, a Peruvian student who was given the opportunity to be the voice of those meetings.
“I felt God’s call to share the word with others in my language,” she said. “Leading this group has taught me how to fully trust in Him.”
Even though she leads the group, she has also learned a lot during this first month.
“Spiritually, I am growing a lot and also learning from the other members of the group,” she said.
Since most members are friends, learning becomes easier for everyone.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to read the word with my friends,” said CU junior Paulo Alvarado, student from Guatemala and member of the group. “I feel that understanding the Bible becomes much easier in that way.”
For many of them, this experience marks their first time studying the Bible, making it a great opportunity to get closer to God.
CU senior Philippe Cocar, a student from El Salvador, shared about his first experience in a group like this.
“I was motivated to study and analyze the word in detail, as well as to get to know the others better,” he said. “It was something I had never done before.”
Meetings are every Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Faith and Ministry. Whether you’re looking for guidance, community or simply a moment of peace, this group welcomes anyone who wants to deepen their faith in a friendly and supportive environment.
