This is The Cafeteria Chronicles where I review the cafeteria food and risk a tummy ache so you don’t have to. I rank the food on a 1-10 scale: 1 means avoid at all costs, and 10 means heavenly.
On Wednesday, March 8, I saw the dessert bar overflowing with treats I absolutely needed to try. There was an assortment of desserts, including chocolate cake, vanilla cake, brownies, strawberry cheesecake and strawberry trifle.
I’m more of a vanilla kind of girl, but I love a good chocolate cake. This cake was topped with chocolate icing and rainbow sprinkles. It was very soft and rich in flavor. It was like I was floating down Willy Wonka’s chocolate river. I gave the chocolate cake an 8/10. The next time this is offered, you need to try it!
I then sampled the vanilla cake, and I was very disappointed. It was topped with vanilla icing and rainbow sprinkles. Sadly, it was hard like it was frozen and was barely edible. My love for vanilla could not overcome the reality of the hard cake. Because of this, I gave it a 2/10. Hopefully it is just as soft as the chocolate cake next time. I will be giving this another try!
Next, I sampled the brownie topped with milk and white chocolate chips. I saw the white chocolate and got very excited, but I was wary because that’s a lot of sugar. My suspicions were correct: it was very sweet, way too sweet, in fact. It was also rich with chocolate flavor, but richer than the chocolate cake. I did not like how sweet and rich it was, but if you love an extremely sweet treat packed with chocolate flavor, you may like this. I had to give it a 6/10 because it has potential. The brownie alone was very soft and gooey on the inside. I think the extra chocolate on top was a little overboard.
I then tried the strawberry trifle and was stunned! It was vanilla pudding with strawberry puree, whipped cream and pieces of vanilla cake. The strawberry puree mixed perfectly with the pudding and did not overpower the dish. The whipped cream was a nice touch that added to the creamy texture. Also, the cake added diversity to the texture and was as soft as I imagine a cloud would be. This was my favorite dessert out of all the options, and I gave it an 8.5/10. My boyfriend has texture issues when it comes to dishes like this, but he was able to eat this in moderation and absolutely loved it. So, if you have texture issues, think about giving it a try! The flavor profile is worth it.
Lastly, I had the strawberry cheesecake. I love cheesecake, I cannot stress that enough. I would consider myself a cheesecake connoisseur. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed when I tried it. The cheesecake was way too soft—almost runny—and tasted unpleasantly sour. It was so bad I was unable to swallow it. This was really upsetting because the cheesecake is normally a 10/10, but this one was definitely a 1/10. I guess I have to be wary of the cheesecake now—I suggest you do the same.
Some desserts earned a second bite, and some should have stayed behind the glass. Either way, the dessert bar definitely kept things interesting. Be on the lookout for these desserts!
